What is the Futures Market and why would anyone want to trade it?

Wikipedia’s response is: A Futures Market is a financial exchange where people can trade Futures Contracts.Well, what is a Futures Contract? A Futures Contract is a legally binding agreement to buy specified quantities of commodities or financial instruments at a specified price with delivery set at a specified time in the future.

It is important to emphasize the word Contract. The first important difference between the Futures Market and, say, the Stock Market is that the Futures Market trades contracts, not shares of stock. You are not buying and selling a share (or piece) of a company. A Futures Contract is an agreement between investors to trade a specific quantity of a commodity or financial instrument, for example, gallons of gas or tons of wheat.

It is fairly simple to see how commodities work. An airline, for example, agrees to purchase 100,000 gallons of fuel for their planes at the current market price, but does not take delivery until sometime in the future.

That was why Southwest Airlines made money when the price of fuel was $140/barrel and other airlines had none. They had negotiated Futures Contracts with several oil companies years earlier when the price of oil was less expensive, and waited for delivery until 2007-2008. When the price of oil is cheap again, they’ll be buying Futures Contracts for delivery in 2011/2012.

That’s all well and good, you say, but that’s not really using a trading system with trading strategies, that negotiating.

For every Futures Contract, there is a degree of risk. Futures Contracts leverage risk against the value of the underlying asset.

Southwest acquired risk. If the price of crude fell below the price they paid, they paid more than they had to. Simultaneously, they reduced risk because they thought that the price of oil would go higher than their contract price. In their case, the leverage was profitable.

Now look at the oil companies. They reduced risk, believing crude oil prices would fall below the contract price they negotiated with Southwest. They acquired risk because the price of oil rose higher than the contract (thereby losing additional revenue they could have earned). In this case, their leverage was not as good as it might have been.

Here’s where you stop and say, I’m not Southwest Airlines. I’m an individual day trader. I don’t want to buy 100,000 gallons of crude. How can I trade Futures?

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), where the majority of Futures contracts are traded, realized that individual investors want to trade Futures just like major institutions; individual traders want to leverage their risk as well. They also understand that small investors will not risk millions of dollars on gallons of gas contracts or tons of wheat. Therefore, the CME decided to create an investment environment that would entice individual investors to trade Futures.

Remember, as small investor, you have lots of exchanges available to you for your trading day. You can invest in large cap stocks on the NYSE, tech stocks with the NASDAQ, ETFs – AMEX, and options at the CBOT. To entice investors to trade Futures, the CME created an exchange that made other exchanges pale in comparison.

First off, the CME created emini Futures designed specifically for individual investors. The e in emini means that they are traded electronically. You’ll have a trading platform right on your desktop where your trades go to the CME. The mini means that the contract is a smaller version of the exact same contract that the larger institutions trade.

The most popular CME emini is the S&P500. This contract is based upon the S&P500 index that represents the top 500 stocks in the NYSE. The S&P500 index is price-weighted, so some of the stocks have more weight or “importance” than others. (larger companies can move the value of the index higher or lower).

And you believed that trading Futures was just for commodities like corn, wheat, rice, crude oil.

Imagine for a moment that you could trade all the top 500 stocks at the same time. That would leverage risk. If one or two stocks did no perform well that afternoon, you would still have 498 other stocks to trade. No need to pick any specific stock. No reason to spend hours and hours doing research on stocks either. Why? Because you are trading all of them. Of course, it would cost a fortune to be able to trade 500 stocks at one time. Well, buying and selling S&P500 emini Futures Contracts is just like trading all 500 stocks at once, for a fraction of the cost.

How did the CME entice a day trader to trade emini Futures? Look at the advantages of trading emini Futures Contracts. You’ll see why many professional day traders gave up other exchanges…

1) The S&P500 emini contract is very liquid, meaning that it has lots of volume, and lots of action. Lots of volume means you can enter and exit quickly, in as little as 1 second. When trading first began in 1997, this contract’s trading volume averaged 7,000 contracts / day. Today, it is not uncommon to see 3-4 million contracts daily.

2) This a a completely electronic environment. The CME does not have Market Makers who could refuse to fill your trade like the NYSE. The CME book is FIFO, first in first out. That makes trading on the CME a level playing field for all investors, no matter if you are trading 1 contract or 100.

3) Commission for emini Futures is based upon a Round Trip instead of in-and-out.

4) The distinction between the Bid price (the highest price that a buyer will pay for a contract) and the Ask price (the lowest price that a seller will sell a contract for) is just one Tick on the CME. (The minimum price movement is known as a Tick. The S&P500 trades in 25 cent increments. 1 Tick = 25 cents. 4 ticks = 1 point. Pay out is a bit different… if you gain 1 tick in your trade, the reward is $12.50, with 4 ticks = $50. Compare a 1 tick – Bid / Ask difference without Market Makers with trading NYSE securities where the difference between the Bid and Ask can be significant, especially if quoted by a Market Maker who makes his living on the spread difference.)

5) Trading emini’s means that you are only watching 1 chart, the same chart, every day, day in and day out. Wouldn’t you become a really hot trader if you only had to watch 1 chart? Stock traders usually watch a basket of stocks at once, flipping charts back and forth for fear of missing some price action.

6) Basically, there is no research to do every evening. Remember, you are trading all “500 stocks” at the same time. You don’t need to research this stock and that stock, worrying about pre-announcements, whisper numbers, quarterly reporting, and accounting minefields.

7) Option traders must be able to correctly trade 4 conditions in order to have consistent trading success: underlying price, strike price, volatility, and time decay. Option traders may be right and yet lose on their trade because time was not their friend and the option expired worthless before they could make a profit. Futures traders are only concerned about 2 conditions: an advancing market or a declining market. Time decay is not a problem for Futures traders.

8) Margin rates are favorable to Futures traders. You can trade 1 S&P500 e-mini contract for just $400 / contract on margin. To trade stocks, at a minimum you would need to buy a lot of 100 shares. An average stock is $25/share, or $2500 to get in the door. Here’s a major difference. The SEC defines a day trade as a transaction that opened and closed within the same trading day. A “pattern day trader” is any trader who executes 4 or more trades within a 5 day period. To by an NYSE day trader, you must open and have in your brokerage account at least $25,000 (or your account will be frozen for 90 days should you be caught day trading). Day trading Futures has no such restrictions. A brokerage account requires far less capital. Most Futures brokers allow you to open an account with just $2,500. This opens the trading Market to even small investors.

9) You can be a day trader with futures and trade them “long” (expecting the contracts to go up). But you can trade futures short (expecting the contracts to go down). There are bans put on short selling stocks that are less than $5. There are no restrictions on short selling Futures Contracts. Why? These are contracts, not shares of stock. As a day trader, you want to take full advantage of the Market’s volatility. If you cannot short, then half of trading is lost to you. If you have to wait until the Market swings back up in order to enter a trade, then on the trading days when the Market is down 200 points, that might be a long wait.

10) If you are trading with an IRA or 401k account, when you exit a trade, you don’t have to wait for the trade to “settle” before you use that same money for the next trade. One second after you exit your current Futures trade, that same money is available to you for another trade. With stock trading, when you exit a trade, you may wait as long as 3 days for your money to settle before you can trade with that money again.

11) Because this is Futures trading, rules originally intended for commodities also apply to e-mini Futures. There is a 60/40 split on taxes: 60% of your trade is long term (15% tax bracket) and 40% of your trade is short term (28% tax bracket). Compare this to stocks…hold a stock less than 1 year, it is a short term trade. You must hold the stock for over a year to qualify for long term capital gains. With Futures, your trading is broken down by the 60/40 rule, even if your average trade is 2 minutes or less. At the end of the year, your Futures broker sends you a 1099-b, a 1 liner, a net number of all your trading, not each individual trade. Say you made $50,000. The 1099-b will show $50,000, that is all. Now you claim $30,000 as long term capital gains and $20,000 as short term (60/40 split). Doing your taxes is so much easier as well. Your broker gives you the net entry, not each trade. You make just 1 entry on your tax return. If you trade stocks, you must enter every trade. If you are a day trader and trade multiple stocks, it may take hours to enter all the transactions. With Futures trading, you are done in a snap.

12) Futures trade just about every day, round the clock, 24/6. The only day you cannot trade Futures is Saturday. Many stocks cannot trade off hours, and if they do, it is very light trading. The S&P500 e-mini is traded all over the world. Depending upon the time of day, there is heavy trading on the e-mini. For example, at 2:00am EST, the Japanese trade the e-mini. At 4:00am EST, the Europeans trade the e-mini. If you have insomnia, e-mini trading is definitely for you.

13) Unlike stocks that trade across multiple exchanges and have different Bid/Ask prices, there is just 1 exchange/1 price for e-mini Futures and that is on the CME. That means for e-mini Futures contracts, there is only one price the posted price.

14) Your fills are guaranteed. If you are in a trade and the e-mini price goes through your offer, you get filled. This can be a problem for smaller Forex traders. You may be in a trade waiting to exit with an offer to sell. The Forex contract goes right by your price and you don’t get filled. Then you read in fine print on your Forex Brokers contract they do not guarantee fills. The CME Clearing House acts as the guarantor to each of its clearing members, thus ensuring the integrity of trades.

15) When contracts expire on the 3rd Friday of the contract month, futures contracts do not expire worthless. You roll your money over to the new contract, unlike Options that expire worthless.

Ancient Origins: Astronomy-astrology is said to have originated with the Chaldeans, in Babylon, Mesopotamia, (now Iraq) around the fourth millennium BC. It was practiced in the temples, where it was blended with religious elements. Later, it spread to Egypt, and around the third millennium BC was being used by rulers to predict the fate of nations: war or peace, famine or plenty. The Chinese were also skilled astronomers, and are thought to have independently begun to use forms of prediction, along with the Maya of Central America and the peoples of ancient India. Some experts believe that Chinese astronomy may extend as far back as 5000 BC. Recent researches into the Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza suggest that observation of heavenly bodies may have even more distant origins. There is startling new evidence that the principal Giza monuments form an accurate terrestrial “map” of the three stars of Orion’s belt as these constellations appeared in 10,500 BC.

Cricket in COVID-19 times started in England from the 8th of July 2020 in empty stadiums and with the strictest of norms and measures. The first 3-Test Series since the outbreak of the pandemic was played against the visiting West Indies. The visitors won the first test by 4 wickets on the fifth and last day of the closely fought encounter. However, the hosts came back stronger in the second and the third test matches, winning the second match by 113 runs and then routing the unpredictable, as ever, West Indies by 269 runs in the concluding match, thus winning the Test Series 2-1.

In Test cricket, English seamer Stuart Broad became the 2nd seam bowler from England, the fourth fast bowler of the world and the seventh bowler overall of the world, to capture 500 wickets in the last encounter that concluded on the 28th of July 2020. Pity, no home supporters or any other supporters were there to cheer him and the team win! The most promising aspect of the New Normal Cricket was that no health-related issues daunted the efforts. And, cricket in empty stadiums continued.

Next came the team of Pakistan for a 3-match Test Series and a 3-match T20I Series against the hosts England. The first test match between England and Pakistan was played from the 5th of August, and England, keeping up the winning streak, won the match by 3 wickets.

The match, played at the Emirates Old Trafford ground in Manchester, was a cliffhanger, and England managed eventually to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on the final day, the hosts going 1-0 up in the series. Rains and bad light continuously interrupted proceedings of the second test at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, allowing only 150 overs to be bowled overall, and the match ended in a frustrating draw for both teams, particularly for Pakistan smarting under the shock defeat in the first match.

The third and the final match of the series, a much-awaited showdown, started from 21st August 2020 at the same venue. England sealed the deal by putting up a mammoth score of 583 for 8 declared, and then going on to rout Pakistan for 273 in the first innings forcing them to follow on. Thanks to rain interruptions England could not go on to win, and Pakistan saved the match at 187 for 4 wickets. However, history was created in that Test match.

38-year-old English fast bowling stalwart, James Anderson, took his 29th five-wicket haul in Pakistan’s first innings and then captured two more scalps in the second innings to complete a record-breaking 600 wickets. The right-arm fast bowler became the first pace-bowler in international Test cricket to achieve the feat of 600 wickets leaving Glen McGrath of Australia in the second place with 563 scalps, and the fourth bowler overall, Sri Lanka’s Muralitharan sitting at the top with incredible 800 wickets, followed by Australia’s SK Warne with 708 in the second position and India’s Anil Kumble with 619 wickets in the third position. James Anderson made his ODI debut in 2002 and earned a place in the 2003 ICC World Cup squad, and he stamped his mark in international cricket. His Test debut came in 2003, and from then onward he played in 156 test matches for England till history was made on the 25th of August 2020. The tall pacer has often been criticized as ‘English-conditions-only’ seamer, and his career was interrupted often as he was either ‘rested’ or dropped due to external factors. However, he proved all his critics wrong, finally, and emerged as one of the finest bowlers of world cricket. Pity again, English fans or any other spectators could not be present at the Rose Bowl to cherish the historical moment. Anyway, the hosts won the series 1-0.

Pakistan is also scheduled to figure in a 3-match T20 international series against the hosts England. The first match on 28th of August, the second on 30th of August and the final match on 1st of September 2020.

Now to come in England’s archrivals Australia, for a 3-Match T20I Series and a 3-match ODI Series. The T20 matches will be played on the 4th, 6th and 8th of September while the one-day international matches are scheduled on the 11th, 13th and 16th of September 2020.

In a most likely extension of the New Normal Cricket India is set to begin their Tour of Australia 2020-21 from the month of October 2020. Cricket Australia has recently announced the full schedule of the matches between the two teams: the first of the 3-match T20I would take place on the 11th of October, followed by a 4-match Test Series from 3rd December and the 3-match ODI Series would begin from the 12th of January 2021. As per the discussion between the two Boards the second test starting from the 11th of December at the Adelaide Oval would be a day and night affair with the pink ball. Continue enjoying cricket from home!

Chinmay Chakravarty has been a cricket lover since his childhood days and played the game at school level and later for social enjoyment. After completing education he started writing on cricket–most on the aspects and games of Indian Cricket. He was an officer of Indian Information Service and superannuated from the post of Director, Press Information Bureau, Kolkata in November, 2019. Published his first solo book ‘Laugh and Let Laugh’ in 2017.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was approaching a new high of $30,000 USD per bitcoin. What has changed since the last time this high was reached?

Covid Crazy

The Covid19 situation has changed the way people do many things. Technology has been thrust into the forefront of everyday living. Things that used to be done physically are now being pushed into the virtual world – schooling, eating in restaurants, entertainment, work and the purchasing of many goods and services. The natural fit to this kind of agenda is using cryptocurrencies. Why? They are an extension of the technologically driven world. They also can be used for competition to the existing financial system at a potentially lower cost.

Acceptance

The last time Bitcoin reached its record high, many institutions were demonizing cryptocurrencies as methods of payment used by criminals for terrorism, money laundering and illicit drug sales. At this time, Mastercard and Visa are linking cryptocurrencies to their credit cards, and Paypal is now accepting Bitcoin to be used on its platform. Many governments are talking about issuing cryptocurrency versions of their traditional currencies. There was also a push from Facebook partnered with major banks and other institutions to issue a cryptocurrency called Libra which did not go very far but the intention is there. Cryptocurrencies are not for criminals any more unless the aforementioned institutions are doing the crimes.

Adoption

The key for any technology is widespread or mass adoption. The more people use something, the more demand there is for its use and the more important it will become. With widespread adoption, the systems working in conjunction with the product also begin to change. Look at the Apple iPod, Microsoft Windows, providers of the internet, and electric cars as examples. With new demand will come new industries and piggy back products that were not very useful without the adoption of the original product.

Vulnerability of Traditional Investments

Due to the Covid scenario and the depression that is unfolding, investment in stocks and bonds is becoming quite expensive and carries higher risk since the underlying economy is disconnected from the performance of these markets. The high debt level makes real estate investment riskier than in the past as well as the volatility of rental income and people’s ability to pay for their mortgages. Cash is a safe haven but rising debt and inflation prospects mean that cash has risk as well. The concept of diversification means that these investments should be held to some extent, but there is now a yearning for an asset that complements these products. This new asset is cryptocurrencies. This product allows for diversification from excessive debt, currency debasement, and high inflation.

Canon make some great DSLR cameras, and Canon users are very lucky because there are some superb lenses to go with them. Of course, all lenses are a compromise – the perfect lens does not exist, that will shoot all types of photography brilliantly. Kit lenses – the manufacturers generalist lenses – are usually pretty good at many styles, but they aren’t excellent at all of them. For example, a sports lens may not necessarily be great for landscapes. And then the cost is also a factor, which can affect the quality of the image and the ease of use of the lens. Of course Canon make a series of different lenses for different DSLRs – both full frame and crop frame. Canon users are lucky because their full frame lenses will also work on their crop frame cameras.

Landscape lenses

In terms of landscape photography, a Canon user has a wide selection of choices, which is quite fortunate because landscape involves patience and the pursuit of perfection. the best landscape photography brings to mind a sense of time and place, allowing the viewer to interact with the image and its expanse and detail. This means that the photographer needs to understand perspective and composition, so that their picture can tell the intended story. Very often, the photographer will have studied the scene well beforehand, making sure that all the conditions are just right. So, I suggest that the best canon lenses for landscape photographer are:

The canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which is really good for architecture and landscapes. It is also light and cheap, which makes it a really good starter lens of those who want to photograph the outdoors.

A good prime lens is the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens. This is a super sharp lens and is a really useful lens to have in your bag. There is some distortion, but nothing that can’t be corrected in editing software.

I also really like the Rokinon FE14M-C 14mm F2.8 lens. It is super sharp at f8 and, whilst some people might baulk at having to use a manual focus lens, I find it really complements all the technology I have to work with and makes me think more about the content of the picture.

Sports lenses

Action and sports photography is all about capturing the moment. Every second counts and you only have one chance to get the shot. Of course, practice does make perfect but having a good fast lens will certainly help. The first choice for nearly every sports photographer would be the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. This lens is excellent in the areas that matter – fast autofocus, pin sharp and great in low light. However, it is quite heavy, so you would probably be working with a monopod. This L lens is designed for full frame Canons, but it works very well on a crop frame, with that extra length taking it up to 320mm.

Another full frame lens is the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. This is a great lens for use in good light and the image quality is superb. This is a really good lens for wildlife photography, especially on a crop frame camera, as the length reaches 640mm.

If you want to be the boss of action photography, you might want to think about the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports lens. It looks like a bazooka and has about the same impact. Despite the weight – 3 kilograms – it produces wonderfully sharp images and has very fast autofocus.

Travel lenses

When you are looking at getting a decent travel lens, you need to think about more than just image quality. How big is it and how versatile, should also be your considerations. because if you are going to take travel pictures, you will be… traveling, and unless you have some willing sherpas, you will be carrying everything around yourself. You should be thinking about two lenses, ideally. A fast prime, and a versatile walk-around zoom lens. The zoom lengths you should be looking at should be around 30-55mm, which are great for street photography, architecture pictures and landscapes.

One of the best Canon lenses out there at the moment is the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. It is a great fast lens that produces excellent images. It is also weather-sealed which is useful if you intend to go beyond the city limits.

The Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR Di LD lens, is also a really good travel lens. It offers a nice, wide angle, very sharp images and is really good in low light.

And the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is a really popular lens with travel photographers, because it gives you that extra reach.

And your prime lens? Well look no further than the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. This nifty fifty is just fab, and will fit into your pocket too.

Portrait lenses

Portrait photographers have to shoot all kinds of pictures, from family style group shots to corporate head-shots. And anyone who has taken pictures of people on a professional basis will know how hard that can be. Because the purpose of a portrait is to reveal something about the subject – their character and personality. If you fail to do that, then they might as well have popped down the Photo-Me machine at the post office. Ideally, the best length for a portrait lens is around 80mm and so Canon crop frame cameras have something of an advantage here because the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens offers 80mm on and APS-c camera, which is perfect. However, if you have a full frame camera, or would just like a little extra length, then the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens is an excellent portrait lens. The f1.8 aperture is ideal for shallow depth of field work that lets the subject really stand out against the background. It is also very sharp, with fast autofocus. And there is no need to go any further, because whilst Sigma and Tamron produce very good 85mm lenses, neither are as good as this Canon lens.
